The Atchafalaya Basin Morganza Spillway is critically important to protect much of coastal Louisiana and the Mississippi Valley from catastrophic Mississippi floods. Cities like Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Orleans, Morgan City and countless of other communities along the Mississippi River depend on the Atchafalaya Basin for flood protection. As the Basin fills in with sediments, it's ability to protect from floods diminishes, putting in jeopardy the ability for our children and grandchildren to safely live in those communities.
The Basin is also an ecological jewel and the most important habitat for migratory birds in the western hemisphere. Considering that most of coastal Louisiana will disappear with sea level rise, the destruction of the Basin will have dire consequences to the world our children will inherit from us.
